 Verses From Scripture

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receives the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
 And every man that strives for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beats the air:
 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

1Corinthians 9:24-27

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober [temperate].
 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
 But let us, who are of the day, be sober [temperate], putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.
1 Thessalonians 5:6-10

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------But the fruit of the Spirit is: love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith,
meekness, temperance [self-control]; against such things there is no law.
Galatians 5:22,23

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Faithful is the Word: If anyone reaches out to overseership, he desires a good work.
 Then the overseer must be without reproach, husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, well-ordered, hospitable, apt at teaching,
 not a drunkard, not contentious, not greedy of ill gain, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous,
ruling his own house well, having children in subjection with all honour.

1 Timothy 3:1-4

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For an overseer must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed, not full of passion, not given to wine, not quarrelsome, not greedy for ill gain;
but hospitable, a lover of good, discreet, just, holy, temperate,
 holding fast the faithful Word

Titus 1:7-9a

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of our God and our Saviour Jesus Christ,
 Grace and peace be multiplied to you through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord,
 according as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who has called us to glory and virtue,
 through which He has given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, so that by these you might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
 But also in this very thing, bringing in all diligence, filling out your faith with virtue, and with virtue, knowledge;
 and with knowledge temperance [self-control], and with temperance [self-control], patience, and with patience, godliness,
 and with godliness, brotherly kindness, and with brotherly kindness, love.
 For if these things are in you and abound, they make you to be neither idle nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
 For he in whom these things are not present is blind and cannot see afar off and has forgotten that he was purged from his sins in the past.

2 Peter 1:1-9
